Our Key Project Areas

1. Policy and Legislative Advocacy Program

SJL understands that advocacy can be an effective change strategy to achieve more equitable and thriving communities. SJL seeks to create lasting change by influencing decisions, practices, policies, and resource allocation within political, economic, and other social systems. Through this program, SJL bridges the gap between community needs, evidence-based solutions, and the decisions made by policymakers and institutions, ultimately working to create a more just, equitable society.

2. Economic Empowerment Program

Through this program, SJL seeks to support income-generating activities and access to financial services to uplift the economic status of community members. SJL welcomes groups of women, youth and persons living with disabilities who desire to raise capital for their activities and curate programs that uplift their economic livelihoods.

3. Community-Based Action Program

SJL designs programs that support a participatory approach towards community-based action. From this approach, SJL assess the needs and resources existing within a community, and, involves community stakeholders in the process, to attempt to create a sustainable and equitable solution to address the community’s needs. In a nutshell, SJL believes that Communities themselves have solutions for their challenges and SJL only serves an enabling role and gives them the support needed to actualize these solutions.

4. Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights Program

SJL designs community-based interventions for strengthening adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Gender inequality and discriminatory social norms mean that girls and young women often lack the voice, agency and autonomy to make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and are frequently denied access to quality sexual and reproductive health information and services.

5. Research and Publications Program

Through this program, SJL conducts research on thematic issues affecting rural communities and is directly linked to its objectives. In doing so, SJL publishes, reports, and gives comments on legislative proposals by counties and the national government of Kenya. SJL also welcomes articles for publication on its blog.
