Empowering Young Women: The Young Women In Politics (YWIP) 50:50 Campaign by the Social Justice League (SJL) is dedicated to empowering young women in Kenyan politics. Funded by the German Federal Foreign Office through IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen)’s Zivik Funding Program, this initiative focuses on four counties: Homabay, Samburu, Kiambu, and Bomet, to drive systemic change and promote gender equality in governance.
Why These Counties?
Strategic Selection: These counties were chosen for their diverse socio-political landscapes, providing critical insights into young women’s political participation across Kenya’s 47 counties.
Homabay: Rural county with deeply rooted cultural and patriarchal norms, representing a politically dominant ethnic tribe.
Samburu: Rural county representing a marginally excluded tribe with limited political representation.
Kiambu: Represents a politically dominant ethnic tribe with unique socio-political dynamics.
Bomet: Rural county with strong cultural norms, representing a politically dominant ethnic tribe.
Key Goals
Raise Awareness: Raise awareness about systemic barriers, gendered elections, financing challenges, psychological toll, stereotypes, and limited political opportunities for young women.
Encourage Participation: Encourage young women to actively participate in politics.
Advocate Inclusion: Advocate for a free, safe, and inclusive political environment for young women.
Highlight Success: Highlight success stories of veteran Kenyan women politicians.
Promote Equality: Promote gender equality in governance.

Young Women: Young women in politics (under 35 years old).
Former Candidates: Young women who attempted to run for office but lost.
Veteran Politicians: Veteran female politicians.
CSOs: Civil society organizations (CSOs).
Leaders: Cultural, political, and religious leaders.
Policymakers: Policymakers.
Political Parties: Political parties.
Kenyan Public: Kenyan public.
Project Activities
Story Sharing: Sharing stories and experiences of young women involved in politics.
Dialogue Sessions: Hosting dialogue sessions with different target groups.
Capacity Building: Conducting capacity-building programs for CSOs and cultural/religious leaders.
Partnerships: Building partnerships with targeted counties and stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging with village elders, political parties, women caucuses, youth groups, and people with disabilities.
Mentorship: Providing mentorship programs with experienced women politicians.
Support Services: Offering psychosocial support, legal aid, and professional image building for young women in politics.
